Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay and his wife pledged to give away 99% of their multiple billions. From the beginning Pierre’s goal was to create a “founding culture” using the moral principles he learned in childhood. “My mother always taught me to treat other people the way I wanted to be treated and to have respect for other people. Those are just good basic values to have in a crowded world.” eBay’s motto of “Empowering people and helping them be the best they can be” is admirable.
The idea of giving back, while often forgotten is certainly not new. It has been going on in billion dollar companies for a hundred years. Henry Ford filed bankruptcy twice in his lifetime, yet went on to be one of the largest contributors to charity in his day. His legacy lives on.
Bill Gates has over $60 billion tucked away in the Microsoft Banks in Reno, Nevada. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given away over $25 billion to charity and plans to give it all away over time.
KeyWriting and Editing believes it is time to get back to the basics and give as generously as we receive even in an uncertain economy. We call it the “Give” project™.
